Our recent exhibition in Dublin Future Internet Assembly (FIA, May 7-10th 2013) shows how FI-WARE enablers truly expose open APIs & protocols embedding the technology complexity and, more important, real-time data and events of Smartcities.

The following picture shows this demo, based on the successful collaboration with the FI-PPP Phase I Outsmart project.

Outsmart SmartSantander public lighting scenario has built its services on top of DCA IDAS, the main asset in the FI-WARE IoT Back-end Device management GE, that collects data of actual sensors in the "Parque de las LLamas" location.

Additionally, this FI-WARE GE is translating sensor data into real-time OMA NGSI events, accesible to developers via the standard APIs of the Context Broker GE at the FI-WARE Testbed in the cloud. In the terminal snapshot we observe the XML a developer receives whenever GPS-located presence sensors in the park are triggered. In this park there exist also lighting, temperature and public lights energy consumption sensors.

Developers will be also able to plug those NGSI events into other FI-WARE enablers, and thus benefiting from other assets such as Bigdata, Complex Event Processing, Security APIs, etc. This way, FI-WARE behaves like a kind of "Open Operating System of a Smartcity", ready for developers and entrepreneurs willing to make true totally new and creative Future Internet Apps exploiting Smartcities data and events.

At present, only Phase II FI-PPP use-case projects can exploit this facility to develop Future Internet vertical solutions. However, stay tuned, because right this summer we are opening it to any third party launching the FI-WARE Open Innovation Lab (OIL).

Together with this exhibition, FI-WARE performed a large set of collaboration activities during the FIA week:

Attendance to other Workshops to establish cooperation links and tasks. For instance, we met the IERC to align our IoT proposal to the newest research trends.

FI-WARE briefing in the FI-PPP session of the FIA Plenary at the Helix on Thu May 9th.

Pre-FIA Workshop on Tue May 7th. This session agenda is included below and it included a presentation of the Outsmart project carried out by Luis Sanchez and a presentation of the Phase II FI-CONTENTII project by Carmen Mac Williams.

The goal of the meeting was to initiate the collaboration with the Use Case Trials from the very start (ever before their internal kick-offs) to ensure that we share a common view and the same objectives. FI-WARE provided a holistic vision of the achievements and the methodology we use and the Use Cases gave us insights in their respective projects. The focus was mainly at architectural level but there was also room for organisational aspects. Overall, a lot of work for four whole days but we are pleased that we now understand each other rather well.

It was a pleasure to know key members of cSpace, Finesce, FI-CONTENT II, FITMAN and FI-STAR and will continue strengthening the collaboration ties with them. We are working very hard to produce Release 2 and start doing hands on experimentation with them and our GEs on FI-WARE’s Testbed.

One week ago all companies involved in the definition and devlopment of FI-WARE Internet of the Things enablers met in Orange premises in Paris.

Our meeting improved our architecture with the lessons learnt from Release 1 and updated strategies of the participating companies in order to ensure we create a consistent and future-proofed solution.

Besides the open architecture we went deep into the technical details of the enablers implementations, discussing interfaces, APIs and forthcoming proof-of-concepts to ensure the smooth synergic integration of all our components.

We did also have a challenging discussion on demos in future events (stay tuned!) and how to incorporate to our working solution new kind of devices and gateways including Open Hardware solutions that we know developers will love to play with.

Meanwhile we were busy with our exciting discussions and decisions, the city of Paris smiled at us with extremely nice snowed landscape of this breathtaking city. It was nice even when it meant some delays and one canceled flight. Fortunately we all got back to keep on

Last week’s Proof of Concept trial of the SafeCity project was a remarkable culmination of a 2 year work. Further to the success of the 1st PoC in Stockholm, where they tested the appropriateness of their solutions in a disaster scenario in a railway tunnel, they embarked again on an exciting and challenging new test. This time, they once again decided to combine their technologies with FI-WARE’s Core Platform to conduct an experiment that would assess the adequateness of both to deal with scenarios involving the police using advanced tools to track down criminals, detect suspicious objects, stop intrusions or deal with loitering.

The test was a fun exercise of members of SafeCity moving around Madrid in freezing temperatures and braving the pouring rain to play the role of “criminals” under the surveillance of the police. This exercise involved the use of cameras, different levels of video processing, video analytics, 3D video engines and crowd behaviour simulation.

The relevance of the two tests performed by SafeCity is certainly high for FI-WARE, as long as it means a real life validation of the project in the area of Safety and Security. Also, the infrastructure of the FI-WARE testbed performed flawlessly.

We equally welcome the exploitation of FI-WARE’s Generic Enablers in combination with the technologies brought in by SafeCity. Particularly, this was the case with the IaaS Data Center Resource Management, the Complex Event Processing and the Semantic Application Support.

There was an immediate impact on the local media and a myriad of mentions on Internet pages (for instance, on the news agency Europa Press).

FI-WARE would like to wholeheartedly thank Safecity for their fantastic contribution to the FI-PPP and for trusting us. They have made a terrific work demonstrating enthusiasm and decisively helping to pave the way to make the Future Internet a reality.

The Internet is definitely going mobile as the impressive figures of the recent Mobile World Congress of Barcelona reveal: more than 1.700 companies, 3.400 journalists and, on the whole, over 72.000 attendees from 200 different countries.

FI-WARE, in its role of leader of the creation of a Future Internet services ecosystem in Europe, set up an exhibition booth together with the other FI-PPP projects and organized a workshop within the parallel event on Thursday 25th and Friday 28th .

During the exhibition at the MWC, several FI-PPP use-case projects demonstrated and explained to experts and interested people how FI services are to transform existing sectors such as logistics, safety, smartcities, agriculture, e-health and e-content industry. In our case, FI-WARE showed how to materialize such ideas in a faster, easier and cost-effective way with its proposal of Future Internet core-platform of generic enablers.

We did not only provide information and get the pulse of experts on our architecture and implementations but we’ve got proposals for collaboration on specific technologies and exploitation areas. Additionally, some datacenters appeared to be interested on the concept of FI-WARE instances to enrich their service portfolio.

The two-day FI-PPP event hosted at the Fira of Barcelona meant a continuation of the exhibitions and the realization of workshops for potential collaborators and adopters.

Finally, we would like to thank Ana García (ENoLL, Concorde) for her efficient and proactive support and the logistic coordination within the FI-PPP.

The agenda was full of things to talk about. Thanks to the engagement of all participants, everything was addressed. A significant amount of time was taken to discuss cross-chapter topics which need to be developed during the next months. All these activities will be handled following the Agile process that has driven FI-WARE to date. By the end of February 2013, Epics, Features and User Stories will be defined to properly capture the appropriate requirements. We also started a discussion on the Open Innovation Lab to pave the way towards opening up the testbed to new external adopters, enabling them to perform their experiments on our infrastructure.

The project is now past its mid-term, and as pointed out in our last review, we need to keep our efforts on a successful second-half. It's crucial to demonstrate the effectiveness of the platform that FI-WARE is providing and the benefits to the Users- the so-called Live Demo. The first version of it, based on the Testbed (first version) was presented during the past project review in November 2012. The release of the second version of the Testbed, therefore, also the Live Demo needs to be revamped.

The Live Demo is the top priority for all project members, therefore, each of us needs to intensify our efforts in contributing to our specific tasks, this in a coherent and coordinated manner. The success of FI-WARE lies in our commitment. We are confident that we can pull together with focus and determination to see this to a favourable end !

Those who followed our previous calls must have noticed that they were basically bringing in complementary expertise to cover gaps in the functional map of FI-WARE. The new partners selected as a result of the successive calls were very similar in profile and objectives to those in the consortium from the beginning of the project.

The third call is different in scope and nature. Now that we have a core of solid GEs and disparate areas covered, our intention is to make sure that the results are experimented and ultimately adopted by the wider community and the industry.

In summary, the 3rd Open Call revolves around three axes:

Take up of FI-WARE results by Internet application developers and entrepreneurs

Creation and support of a dynamic innovation ecosystem around FI-WARE results

Gain market visibility for the technologies and services developed by FI-WARE

The documents associated to the call are already available on the call page, namely the Guidelines for Applicants, the templates for the proposals and the Consortium Agreement & Collaboration Agreement. We will also populate the Q&A section if we decide to clarify any aspects that may need further explanations.

The deadline is February, 27 so there is still plenty of time. If you think that you can attract adopters, communities and promote the awareness of our result in our target ecosystems, we are looking for you!

We are delighted to announce that two new reference implementations of Fi-Ware Generic Enablers just went Open Source, available under the BSD License. The Repository and Marketplace GE developed by SAP within the Apps and Services Ecosystem chapter are from now on directly available on github.

Marketplace and Repository in the Apps and Services Ecosystem Architecture Blueprint

The Repository

The Repository is a core enabler of the FI-Ware Business Framework. The repository provides a consistent uniform API to USDL service descriptions and associated media files for applications of the business framework. A service provider can use the Repository to publish the description of various aspects of the service according to a Unified Service Description Language (USDL).

The Marketplace

In general the marketplace is an instrument to facilitate commerce by bringing together vendors and buyers, or offers and demand, or producers and consumers. The core functionality of the Marketplace is to provide a uniform service interface to discover and match application and service offerings from providers and sources (e.g. published by different stores) with demand of consumers. This core functionality provides a basis for extended services depending on the domain and nature of the target markets.
